Hot Stuff!

Is it me or is it really hot out here?

I’ve run 96km since my last post 2 weeks ago and it’s been really hot. After one run, I ran up onto a friend’s deck, kicked off my shoes and jumped into their pool in my running clothes. It felt sooo awesome.

And just when I thought I couldn’t be any hotter… we started hill training!

What is hill training? You find a hill and you run repeats up and down it. Every week we add more repeats until it gets seriously hard, stinking hot, completely exhausting and fairly boring. So why do it? Running is supposed to be fun and happy, right? So why? You do it for the payoff, and it’s a big one. You start flying on the flats and it feels awesome.

Hill Training

A few hot secrets

Fuel Belts
Get one.

Hydration
Hydration is really important. Make sure to drink a lot. So far I’ve learned things like if you get dehydrated you can actually stop sweating, your face will get a coating of dried salt, and you get light-headed.

Body Glide
Body glide is a kind of slippery goop that looks like a mini deodorant. You roll it all over your toes so they slip around and you hopefully don’t get blisters. Pretty great idea. It’s good for all you potentially blustery bits. I leave that one to you imagination.

And of course a running hat, sun glasses and sun screen.

Here are some Hot Weather Running Tips.

After Burn: Training smart through the hot season pays off when temperatures cool down.

23km. Now we’re pushin’ it.

Ran 23km on our Sunday Long Slow Run and it went great. That’s the longest I’ve ever run. The days leading up to me running a longer distance for the first time, I start to feel a bit intimidated by it. That’s what’s exciting about running, and I think that’s a lot of the addiction. It feels really exciting to achieve something that was initially extremely intimidating. It’s the ‘I did it!’ factor and it’s awesome!

Photos from the Road

I always have either a camera, a flip, an iPhone on me wherever I go. It’s embarrassing sometimes, but I can’t help myself, I’m a creative junkie. I’m the Inspector Gadget of running. I’ve even toyed with the idea of tweeting the marathon. Yeah, I know I know, crazy.

Pitt BullThe Boys at Run Club
Met up with this friendly Pitt Bull while running the back roads. The boys at Run Club. I love when they take the wrong route and we get ahead of them for a brief time, but they always catch up and pass us again. Great bunch.

Starbucks treats their Runing Room neighbours so well. Thank you Starbucks!Hugs from the cat after my run. Check out the dirt on my legs. (So hard core. ; )
