I was contacted by Readers’ Digest to photograph PEI’s Kate Eastman, of Turn on the Lights. Kate is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse who has set up an organization to support and raise awareness.
There needs to be more awareness about the problem of sexual abuse and less fear discussing it.
I can tell you from my own personal experience that sexual abuse is very prevalent, and people don’t want to know about it. They are uncomfortable and want to pretend it doesn’t happen that often. But it happens all the time, and it has happened to some of the strongest people you know. Kate and I had an open conversation and became quick friends. Thank you for being so strong and an inspiration for the rest of us Kate. You are an incredible young woman doing incredible things. #undefeated

Heather, thank you. That is one of the sweetest things I have read. Thank you. I am glad to have you as a friend.
You look great Kate – there is a lot of sexual abuse in young family members so I truly appreciate everything you are doing. It is really hard to watch or hear a child say they want to commit suicide because they are no good. I am really proud of you.
Awesome photos Kate! You are truly “undefeated”!
With everything Kate has gone through, her kind and generous heart remains – strong and undefeated. So proud!
