Readers’ Digest: Kate Eastman

Kate Eastman

I was contacted by Readers’ Digest to photograph PEI’s Kate Eastman, of Turn on the Lights. Kate is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse who has set up an organization to support and raise awareness.

There needs to be more awareness about the problem of sexual abuse and less fear discussing it.

I can tell you from my own personal experience that sexual abuse is very prevalent, and people don’t want to know about it. They are uncomfortable and want to pretend it doesn’t happen that often. But it happens all the time, and it has happened to some of the strongest people you know. Kate and I had an open conversation and became quick friends. Thank you for being so strong and an inspiration for the rest of us Kate. You are an incredible young woman doing incredible things. #undefeated

WE ARE ALL TREATY PEOPLE.

In the spirit of Reconciliation, we acknowledge that the land upon which we gather is unceded Mi’kmaq territory. Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island), Mi’kma’ki, is covered by the historic Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We pay our respects to the Indigenous Mi’kmaq People who have occupied this Island for over 12,000 years; past, present and future.
