5 months of training, 74 runs, 875kms, and a million laughs.
There is no way I could have done all that alone. This January I was fortunate to be the Marathon Instructor at the Charlottetown Running Room, leading an 18-week training program for the Halifax Blue Nose and Ottawa Marathons in May. Running with a group changes the whole experience.
I am a self-proclaimed happiness junkie. I do a lot of reading and research on happiness. “Everyone from contemporary scientists to ancient philosophers agree that having strong social bonds is probably the most meaningful contributor to happiness”, and that “Of all the things that wisdom provides for living one’s entire life in happiness, the greatest by far is the possession of friendship.”[1] So consider that and couple it with runners being a bunch of positive attitude, A-type personalities, hyped up on endorphins all the time and you’ve got yourself a seriously happy environment.
There is something very special about the people you run with. Our marathon group, The Hard Core Hottie Boo Boos is a phenomenal bunch of buddies. Why Hard Core? We ran in the worst of winter weather. Snow, sleet, ice, rain, and freezing cold temperatures couldn’t stop us. Why Hottie? Because we were cold out there and the obvious play on words. I mean, we’re a pretty sexy bunch. Why Boo Boos? ‘Cause well ya get a few when you train for marathons. You just can’t take things too seriously and you have to have fun if you’re going to do this stuff. It was some crazy awesome fun!
